ICoNS Code of Conduct
Purpose
The International Consortium on Newborn Sequencing (ICoNS) is a global academic and clinical research collaboration dedicated to advancing equitable, ethical, and effective implementation of genomic sequencing in newborns. This Code of Conduct defines the expectations for behavior and values within our community to ensure a welcoming, respectful, and productive environment for all.

Scientific Integrity and Excellence
We uphold rigorous scientific standards, transparency, and academic honesty. All contributions should be evidence-based, responsibly sourced, and clearly attributed.Respect and Inclusion
We respect the dignity, rights, and contributions of all members, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, career stage, or institutional affiliation. Expected Behavior
All ICoNS members, including but not limited to researchers, clinicians, policymakers, funders, students, and institutional partners, are expected to:
Conduct themselves in a professional, courteous, and collaborative manner in all consortium-related activities—whether in person, online, or in writing.
Refrain from discriminatory, harassing, or bullying behavior.
Be mindful of cultural, geographic, and institutional differences, and communicate with empathy and clarity.
Engage in open scientific discussion without personal attacks.
Attribute others' work appropriately and avoid plagiarism or misrepresentation.
Respect confidentiality and data governance protocols, especially when working with sensitive genetic, clinical, or patient-derived information.
Comply with applicable ethical standards, laws, and institutional review board (IRB) policies.
Unacceptable Behavior
Unacceptable behaviors include, but are not limited to:
Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form.
Sexual harassment or unwelcome sexual attention.
Demeaning or exclusionary jokes, comments, or imagery.
Sustained disruption of meetings, presentations, or collaborative spaces.
Retaliation against individuals who raise concerns or report violations of the Code.
Use of the ICoNS Name and Representation
The ICoNS name, logo, and branding may not be used in any public or professional context without prior authorization. Only designated officers and individuals who have received explicit permission may speak on behalf of ICoNS or represent the consortium in external communications, public statements, media engagements, or official collaborations. Unauthorized use or misrepresentation of ICoNS affiliation may result in corrective action or removal from the consortium.
Reporting and Enforcement
If you observe or experience a violation of this Code of Conduct, we encourage you to report it promptly to the ICoNS Ethics & Conduct Committee at [INSERT EMAIL OR CONTACT MECHANISM].
All reports will be handled confidentially and investigated respectfully. Retaliation against reporters will not be tolerated.
Possible responses to violations include informal mediation, warnings, suspension from activities, or removal from the consortium, depending on the severity of the behavior.

This Code of Conduct is a living document. We commit to revisiting and refining it regularly in collaboration with our community. We welcome suggestions to ensure it reflects evolving standards of equity, inclusion, and research integrity.
