ICoNS Launches "Challenging Cases": Forging Global Consensus in Real-Time
January 2026 — As genomic newborn screening (gNBS) moves from the laboratory to the front lines of public health, the global community is encountering a new frontier of clinical and ethical complexity. To meet this challenge, ICoNS is proud to announce the official launch of our Challenging Cases sessions.
Where the Experts Seek Answers
The field of genomic screening is evolving at a breakneck pace, often leaving clinicians and researchers with more questions than answers. These sessions provide a unique, professional space where the world’s leading experts collegially dissect and resolve the most complex and ambiguous cases submitted from the field.
These are the cases that perplex even the most seasoned specialists—scenarios where there are no clear-cut answers and the path forward is unmapped. By bringing these difficult situations into the light during our monthly consortium calls, ICoNS provides a platform to consider every angle, ensuring that no clinician has to navigate these complexities alone.
A Dynamic Debut
The initiative was spearheaded and launched by Dr. Laurence Faivre, who chaired the inaugural session this January with the support of a dedicated Review Committee. What began as a formal presentation quickly transformed into a high-energy, dynamic exchange. We witnessed extraordinary engagement from our 90+ global attendees, turning the session into a masterclass in collaborative problem-solving.
From Individual Challenges to Global Impact
The ultimate goal of the Challenging Cases series is to transform individual clinical hurdles into shared global knowledge. By openly discussing these cases, ICoNS is:
Disseminating Real-Time Learnings: Ensuring that a breakthrough in one corner of the globe informs practice everywhere.
Shaping Future Frameworks: Using today’s toughest cases to build the evidence-based guidelines and decision-making standards of tomorrow.
Ensuring Equitable Care: Providing all member programs—regardless of location—access to a multidisciplinary brain trust of world-class experts.
Looking Ahead
Challenging Cases will now be a permanent fixture of our monthly consortium calls throughout 2026. This initiative is a cornerstone of the ICoNS mission: to move beyond theoretical research and actively lead the effort to secure the health of future generations through trusted, unified standards.
